Betty Jean Ormes, 87, of Paducah, KY passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017 at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Ormes was born in Warrior, Alabama on November 5, 1929 to Felix and Alice Self. Mrs. Ormes taught for 32 years, starting her career in Alabama before moving to Paducah where she taught at Jetton Junior High School, St. Mary's Catholic School and Paducah Tilghman High School. While at Paducah Tilghman, she taught health, physical education and general science while also coaching the girls basketball team and track team. Mrs. Ormes was a member of the Lambda Chapter for 36 years. During that time she served as Chapter President, Secretary, Treasurer and Chaplain. She was chosen to receive the "Jane Miller Wind Beneath My Wings" Kentucky Lambda Chapter Award. Betty was active in her community and church, belonging to a book club, Retired Teachers Association, McCracken County Homemakers, the 80 Ladies Lunch Bunch, Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club and several bridge clubs. She was a member of Fountain Avenue United Methodist Church and chaired activities for the More Mature Members. Since retirement, Mrs. Ormes has been on 17 mission trips to Alaska, South Korea, Africa, Egypt, Central America, England, Ireland, several Indian reservations, and other mission points. Her private travels included trips to Paris, London, Amsterdam, Germany, Israel and every state within the USA.
Mrs. Ormes is survived by two sons, Mike Ormes of Paducah, KY and Bobby Ormes and wife Debbie of Paducah, KY; three grandchildren, Jacob (Kathy) Ormes, Logan (Carrie) Ormes, and Megan Ormes; and seven great-grandchildren, Nathan Ormes, Hallie Ormes, Hannah Ormes, Avianna Ormes, Addlee Ormes, Luke Ormes and Logan "Little Man" Ormes.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Robert Carmak Ormes, Jr.; her parents, Felix Sylvester Self and Alice Belle Cantrell Self; one daughter, Amanda Carol Ormes; two sisters, Mildred Summford and Lucille Grimes; and one brother, Erwin Self.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Fountain Avenue United Methodist Church, with Rev. Sara Tate officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Monday, February 6, 2017 at Milner & Orr Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Paducah.
