Charles Haymond Tilford, 85, of Gilbertsville, died Sunday at 11:19am at Baptist Health-Paducah.
He was born on April 5, 1930 in the Woodville Community of Ballard County to the late George and Bessie Kitchen Tilford. He attended Barlow High School, graduating in the class of 1950. He began working at the Paducah Atomic Energy Plant in 1952. On August 9, 1952, he married Rose Kilgore, to whom he was married for 64 years. He became a Certified Machinist at Caterpillar, Peoria, IL in 1956. He returned to Kentucky in 1959, where he ran an Automatic Transmission Repair Shop in Grahamville, working a few doors down from Tilford's Garage Texaco Station, operated by his brothers, Garth and Barkley Tilford.
Charles felt called to the Ministry and subsequently attended Murray State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was then accepted at Vanderbilt University and graduated with a Masters Degree from the School of Divinity in 1972. During this time period, he served as Pastor of Christian churches in Salem, KY and Liberty Grove, KY. Upon completion of his studies at Vanderbilt, he assumed the Pastorship at First Christian Church of Fulton, Ky. While serving this congregation, he resumed studies at Murray State University where he earned a Masters Degree in Education with a Reading Specialist certification. He subsequently taught reading and adult education classes at several area schools and retired from the McCracken County School System in 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rose Kilgore Tilford; son, Dr. Ron H. Tilford of Paducah; sister, Barbara Tilford Sullivan of Kevil, KY; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, George and Bessie Kitchen Tilford; three brothers, Jewel R. Tilford, Garth Tilford, and Alben Barkley Tilford; and sister, Shirley Tilford McMichaels.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Thursday at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with Rev. Keith Tilford officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5-8pm and from 11am until the funeral hour on Thursday.
