Earl Metcalf

Earl L. Metcalf, 91, of Lone Oak passed away at 2:05 p.m. at his home on Tuesday, July 6, 2010.

Mr. Metcalf retired with 37 years of service from the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad as the Stationery Stockkeeper. He was a member of Highland Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a veteran of WWII, where he was a Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and E.T.O. Ribbon recipient. He was a 1937 graduate of Lone Oak High School.

He loved to play golf and was a long time member of Paxton Park golf course, where he was one of the oldest living members, and where he was respected as a sportsman and a gentleman. He was an avid, knowledgeable basketball fan, having refereed high school basketball games at both the local and state level for 25 years. He was extremely proud of his family, loved to care for his home and his neighbors, and enjoyed talking and reminiscing with friends.

He is survived by two sons, Dr. Ed Metcalf and wife, Elizabeth, of Roswell, Ga., and Cdr. USN (retired) Thomas E. Metcalf and wife, Iris, of Virginia Beach, Va.; one daughter, Kay Holland and husband, Gene, of Paducah; five grandchildren, Brian Metcalf and wife, Melanie, of Bath, Me., Lori Sanders and husband, Jeff of Virginia Beach, Va., Dawn Clark and husband, Pete, of Gloucester, Va., Holly Rodgers and husband, Bryan of Paducah and Drew Holland of Cordova, Tenn. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Matthew and Allison Metcalf, Liam and Evan Clark, and Camryn Rodgers; one brother, J.L. Metcalf and wife, Rebecca, of Paducah and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Kittie Pepper Metcalf; his parents, Lee and Mary Harris Metcalf; three brothers, Paul, Scott and William Odell Metcalf; two sisters, Goldie Marie Metcalf and Esther Watkins; and one great-grandson, Caleb Rodgers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010, at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner & Orr Funeral Home with the Rev. Stan Reid officiating, burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Friends may visit with the family after 5 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2010, at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner & Orr Funeral Home.
