Alston
Harold T. Alston Sr., 93, of Paducah, died Sunday, November 3, 2013, at Baptist Health Paducah.
Harold T. Alston was born to the late Hannibal C. and Dowal Steele Alston. He was educated in the public schools and graduated from Lincoln High School. He attended Transylvania University and Tuskegee Institute where he studied electronics. While at Tuskegee he was drafted into the Army Air Corps.
Harold Alston, one of the Famous Tuskegee Airmen ground crew during World War II, was trained to build and service the new technology of RADAR. He served as an electronics technician alongside the Tuskegee-Trained Pilots of the 332nd Fighter Group.
Upon returning from the Army Air Corps, he worked in several fields including construction, the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, Civil Service Examiner, a manager for Mammoth Life Insurance Co., and he had a shop where he sold and repaired radios and televisions.
As a community activist, he served on several boards, including treasurer and founding member of the Oscar Cross Boys Club, the Mural Board, Water Board, Paducah Board of Realtors, and was the first Black Realtor and Broker in Paducah. He was the first Black to open and successfully maintain his own real estate office, Alston & Associates Realty, for over 30 years. He felt it was important to live his life in a way that would lead others to Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jethel Wall Alston; one son, Harold Alston Jr.; four brothers, L.T., Johnny, Benny, and George; three sisters, Margaret Jean, Johnnie Mae and Clara; and one grandson, Anton Gregory Hall.
He is survived by four daughters, Jackie Hall of Plantation, Fla., Diane (Marvin) Johnson of Memphis, Tenn., Pamela (Clarence) Vaughn of Boca Raton, Fla., and Deborah (Eddie) Edmonds of Paducah; two sons, G. Ronald (Cynthia) Alston and Bryan Alston (Melanie Mathis), all of Paducah; three sisters, Anna Alston and Delores White, both of Paducah and Connie (Lysanias) Broyles, Davenport, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Juanita Williams of Maple Height, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews and many devoted friends including The Pinochle Club, and a special friend, Louise Cooper.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to: the Washington Street Church Building Fund; or to the American Heart Association.
The funeral will be held Saturday, November 9, 2013, at Washington Street Missionary Baptist Church at 12 noon with Reverend Raynarldo Henderson officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at the church.
