Services for James "Blue Suede Shoes" Godwin, 74, of Paducah will be at noon Thursday at New Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he was a member and deacon. The Rev. Fred Ford will officiate. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Godwin died at 2:21 p.m. Saturday at Western Baptist Hospital.
He graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, Tenn., and from West Kentucky Vocational School in commercial foods. Mr. Godwin was a retired chef at the Ritz Hotel after more than 25 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are nine daughters, Patricia Rogan of Gallatin, Tenn., Lucille Clark of Paducah, Flora McKendrick, Beulah Hannon, Ardrene Carruthers, Teresa Godwin and Sharmaine Godwin-Lawrence, all of Atlanta, and Carmelia Godwin and Anna Taylor, both of Dallas; two sons, Lewis Carruthers of Las Vegas and Thomas Carruthers of Dallas; one sister, Lucille Anderson of Tacoma, Wash.; three brothers, Billy Carver Godwin of Tacoma and Joe David Godwin and Jerry Godwin, both of Memphis, Tenn.; 25 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances J. Godwin; three sons; one daughter; two sisters; and three brothers. His parents were Henry Godwin and Mezello Fenner Godwin.
Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Pettus-Rowland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
