James Smallmon

Memorial services for James Thomas Smallmon will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 15, 2010, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Paducah with the Rev. Jamie Broome officiating. Private family graveside services will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
James Thomas Smallmon, 86, of Paducah passed away at 4:05 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Parkview Nursing and Rehab in Paducah.
Mr. Smallmon, born in Paducah on May 21, 1923, was the son and stepson of Ola Morgan Smallmon Burton and Toy E. Burton, respectively. He was a 1941 graduate of Augusta Tilghman High School. He was a Private First Class Army Medical Corpsman in World War II and served on several hospital ships, the last being the USS Ernestine Koranda. Throughout his tenure in the service, he traveled aboard these ships to many ports in Italy, Africa, England, Sicily, Algeria, France, Manila and Hawaii. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the European-African Medal, East Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Middle East Campaign Medal, Victory Medal World War II, the Good Conduct Medal and three overseas service bars. He was honorably discharged December 6, 1945, at Camp Haan, California.
He has been a loyal member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Paducah since the early 1950s and longtime Master Mason of Plain City Lodge No. 449, F.& A.M. of Paducah.
J.T. was a 28-year employee of Union Carbide Uranium Enrichment Plant in Paducah. During his time of employment, he worked in several areas including Converter Maintenance, Cascade Operation, Machine shop and he retired as a senior inspector from the Shipping and Receiving Dept. on December 31, 1983.
Mr. Smallmon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sue Ellis Smallmon of Paducah; children, Nan Wilson and husband Joe, Debra Dempsey, James Mark Smallmon and wife Diane, all of Paducah; one brother, Robert Warren Smallmon and wife Zane of Nashville, Tenn.; and Kynda Smallmon Canada, beloved former daughter-in-law, of Springfield, Ill.
J.T. enjoyed nine grandchildren, Andrew Wilson and wife Cristi of Nashville, Tenn., Benjamin Dempsey of Nashville, Ellen Moore and husband Donald, Emily Howard and husband Joseph, Aaron Wilson and wife Michelle, Sarah Beth Dempsey, Matthew Dempsey and wife Lyndsie, Michelle Smallmon, and Melissa Smallmon, all of Paducah. Remaining are nine great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two nieces; one nephew; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and children Thomas Warren Smallmon and Beth Lee Smallmon.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Immanuel Baptist Church, Renovation Fund, 3465 Buckner Lane, Paducah, KY 42001, for the sanctuary that was damaged in a fire.
