Joseph Barnett

Mr. Joseph Loraine Barnett, 97, of Paducah, Kentucky, died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2013, at the Superior Care Home.

Joseph was born September 10, 1916, to his parents, Ora Lee Henson Barnett and Euwin Loraine Barnett. He graduated from Augusta Tilghman High school, Class of 1936. He assisted the American Red Cross in citizen lifeboat rescue efforts during Paducah's Flood of 1937. United States Army Sergeant Barnett fought bravely in World War II, and served honorably in the European Theatre of Operations. Barnett entered the conflict as a part of the Normandy Invasions, along the Coasts of Normandy, France. He fought in the notorious "Battle of the Bulge," the greatest land battle in the history of the U.S. Army. He was awarded a Meritorious Citation for Honor and Valor for defending the Port of Antwerp, Belgium.

Barnett was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was appointed an Honorary Kentucky Colonel and Duke of Paducah. After years of well-timed service, he retired as an Engine Foreman from the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Barnett was a member and Deacon Emeritus of the Broadway Church of Christ, Paducah.

He is survived by three children, Steve (Ginny) Barnett of Greenwood Village, CO., Hope (Bill) Osborne of Lone Oak, KY.; and Phillip (Carla) Barnett of Paducah, KY.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Mrs. Leona Estelle Dodson Barnett; his brother, Alonzo Taylor Barnett; and his sister, Gwendolyn Henson Barnett Burrus.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at the Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with Dan Owen, John Pennisi, and Andrew Clausen officiating. Entombment with United States Army Burial Rites will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at the Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial tribute gifts to: Broadway Church of Christ, The Global Preacher Training Center, 2855 Broadway, Paducah, KY 42001 and the Lourdes Foundation, The Eckstein Cardiovascular Institute, 1530 Lone Oak Road, Paducah, KY 42003.
