Funeral services for Oren Dale Hanbaum, 81, of Paducah will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Milner and Orr Funeral Home of Paducah. Rev. Ben Butler will officiate. Burial with military honors will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
He died Sunday, January 4, 2009, at Marion Veterans Administration Hospital.
A native of Clay County, Ill., Oren was born February 21, 1927, to the late Ernest L. and Mary Ann Jones Hanbaum.
Oren served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a former P.O.W. during the Korean War; was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, a Combat Infantry badge, Good Conduct Medal (WW II); and various other military medals and ribbons. In 2001, the Disabled American Veteran-Kentucky Chapter named him "Distinguished Veteran of the Year." He served on a committee that established the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Paducah and the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. He had served as both a National Service Officer and State Service Officer for the D.A.V. Oren held life memberships in the D.A.V., American Legion, American Ex-Prisoners of War, and Military Order of Purple Hearts.
He was a former employee of Union Carbide Company in Ohio, Dowell Oil Company in Flora, Ill., and retired as a carman with Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. He was a 3rd degree Mason with Masonic Lodge #204 in Flora, Ill., for over 50 years and was a member of Pleasant Grove Methodist Church in Viola, Ky.
Surviving are three daughters, Sharon Lee and husband George of North Terre Haute, Ind., Connie Derr and husband Gary of Merced, Calif., and Marcia McCulloch and husband Dan of Logan, Ohio; one son, Rodney K. Hanbaum and fiancee Cassie Campbell of Creal Springs, Ill.; two sisters, twin Audrey Pozero of San Antonio, Texas, and Charlotte Strait of Urbana, Ill.; 10 grandchildren, James Lee, Jeffery Lee, Melissa Opheim, Mandy Pressley, Javey Michael Derr, Jon Douglas Derr, Heather Danielle Hanbaum, Jillian Leigh Hanbaum, Zachary Tyler Hanbaum, and Keelie Jade Quick; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Hohlt Hanbaum; his parents, Ernest L. and Mary Ann Hanbaum; two brothers, Kenneth Hanbaum and William Hanbaum; and two infant siblings.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5-9 p.m. with Masonic rites at 7 p.m. at Milner and Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.
